Garage Sale for the Arts

They came, they saw, they bought.

That was the scene at Saturday’s garage sale for the Ajo Council for the Arts (ACFA). More items that we could count came in on Thursday and Friday, donated by Ajoites who appreciate the work ACFA does for the arts in this small town.

There was a lineup at the door well before 7:30 AM — and once the doors opened the crowd poured in. It was so busy I didn’t even have time to take any pictures. 🙂

Many thanks to Sally Morrow and her committee for organizing the event, and to all those who volunteered to help in so many ways.

Thanks also to artists Pat Rigdon and Joyce Chaney who each donated a piece of art. Lots of people bought tickets for a chance to win the pieces.

Riding High on Ole Hap

The Ajo Council for the Fine Arts is holding a fundraiser Saturday March 1 at the Lion’s Club in Ajo. Early risers will love this event — doors open at 7:30 AM. The sale runs through til 4 PM so you can shop later as well. 🙂

In addition to all the good things that will be on sale, two local artists have donated works of art — Pat Rigdon has donated a beautiful floral watercolor and Joyce Chaney has donated a hand-painted metal horse.

Ole Hap“Ole Hap” is named for the cowboy who told Joyce the story of the bucking horse moon — when a horse bucks and has all four feet off the ground, it resembles a crescent moon hanging in the sky.

Ole HapIn keeping with the story, Joyce has painted constellation-like horses on the metal, including a crescent moon on the horse’s hip. (Click the photo for a larger image.)

Tickets to win one of these pieces will be available at the garage sale — 1 ticket for a $1 donation or 6 tickets for $5.

DAG Meeting

The December meeting of the Desert Artist Guild was held at the Ajo Country Club and there was a lot on the agenda. The two most important items were the Federated Church Art Show & Sale on December 14 and DAG’s 5th Annual Juried Show & Sale opening January 10.

Pat Rigdon is asking for volunteers to help staff the Federated show — she’d appreciate hearing from anyone who can offer to work a shift. (The show runs from 10 to 3.) Entry forms for the show can be downloaded here.

Jolene Northup gave an overview of the Juried show and is also looking for volunteers. Entry forms for that show will be posted soon.

Members who participated in last weekend’s Open Studio talked about their positive experiences — and sales! Congratulations everyone. There’s talk about doing another one in the spring.

Another event that caught everyone’s attention is a possible Art Festival in February during the annual Quilt Show — more info will follow on that.

Most members stayed after the meeting for lunch and to offer feedback on work presented by two of the artists, Pat Rigdon and DAG chair Sherry Fritschle.

The next meeting will be at the Country Club on Tuesday January 7 at 10 AM. Hope to see you there!
